Biography

Ms. Sara Casali is the current Director of Field Education at Concordia University Wisconsin. She is also a Doctorate in Social Work student at the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN. Ms. Casali’s doctoral research is focused on studying intersectionality and social work education. Her dissertation examines the history of intersectionality and how social work educators infuse the theory into social work curriculum. Exploring what this theory means to educators is necessary to address gaps in knowledge and provide eventual guidance in how to infuse intersectionality into coursework. There is an assumption that social work instructors are familiar with and recognize intersectionality and are, in fact, including it in their curriculum. As social workers, it is fundamentally necessary to recognize the impact of an individual’s intersecting social identities and experiences.

As the Director of Field Education, Ms. Casali has formed positive working partnerships with community agencies across the State of Wisconsin in order to provide both her BSW and MSW students opportunities to learn and develop social work skills. Ms. Casali is also a Co-Principal Investigator for a $2.2 million Federal Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Grant, Opioid Impact Family Support Specialist Certificate Training Program.

Prior to Academia, Ms. Casali spent almost 20 years working within the child welfare system in Milwaukee County. Ms. Casali was both an ongoing case manager and a supervisor for contracted agencies within the Division of Milwaukee Child Protective Services. For over 14 years, she also held a contracted position through the State of Wisconsin, as the Permanency Counselor at Children’s Court in Milwaukee, where she worked closely with all parties involved in the Termination of Parental Rights process. Currently, Ms. Casali also completes court ordered Child Custody and Physical Placement Evaluations for Milwaukee County Family Court, where she has testified as an expert on the subject.

Ms. Casali has her Master of Social Work from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marquette University.
