Biography

Ellisha Garner-Samuels is the daughter of Gwen Carr and the sister of Eric Garner. Eric was murdered on July 17, 2014, with his last words heard saying, “I Can’t Breathe”! 

Eric Garner died in the New York City borough of Staten Island, at the hands of Daniel Pantaleo, a former New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer, who put him in a prohibited chokehold while arresting him. There were other law enforcement officers present, that stood around and watched Eric’s lifeless body lying on the sidewalk with no one rushing to administer medical treatment.

Ellisha and Eric were born and raised with four other siblings, with Ellisha being the youngest and 5 years younger than Eric in a middle-class area of Brooklyn, New York called Gowanus, which is known as the rich part of the ghetto. Eric would have turned 50 years old, this year on September 15th, 2020. 

Ellisha, is no stranger to the movement, from the age of 11 years old, Ellisha roamed the streets of New York with numerous Justice speakers, advocating against social injustices with other families, who’ve lost loved ones to tragic deaths with racial overtones. Now, she has become an advocate for her own family reliving the horrific tragedy of losing her brother, Eric Garner. His unexpected and untimely death continues to have a devasting impact on her, her mother Gwen, and other members of the Garner family, who will keep fighting to the finish. 

Ellisha declares the fight will never be finished until people stop killing each other so selfishly!
