Session Description

In this workshop, participants will be introduced to a spectrum of gender identities and expressions. The workshop is designed to prepare individuals for positive interactions with transgender clients at their institutions. Identity terminology will be discussed. The differences between biological sex, gender identity, and gender expression will be defined. Common mistakes will be discussed, and action steps for embracing trans-affirmative services will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

1. Attendees will learn the differences between biological sex, gender expression, and gender identity.
2. Students will gain a nuanced understanding of what it means to \”transition\”.
3. Students will understand common experiences of transgender individuals in health care, and specific steps to intervene.
